This little incident is from my recent trip to Lincoln, NB. I think there is some good material from this trip and hopefully I'll be blogging/drawing more about it soon.

So what's the deal? Why have I been away so long? Well, I'm glad to say that my hiatus from 'oh, hey' has not been a result of any sort of depression... I'd actually contest that it's been the opposite. I've been very happy/active/social since my last semi-morbid post. I think that last post from April was actually great catharsis. oh, hey. now that I'm back here I realized that I've missed you.

I'm going to compose a zine of some of the comics I've written over the past year. If you'd like a copy send my an email @ schreima31@hotmail.com titled 'oh,hey' and give me your address... If I already have your address... just be a buddy and do it anyway...If you live in Athens you have the option of me handing you the zine... In which case: send me an email titled 'oh, hey' and in the body write hand me the zine. I'll try to have these compiled and in the mail by July 14th. What's today? Oh, ship. I've gotta get off this Kinko's computer, my balance is probs like 2o bucks. My computer was stolen last week! Right out of my bedroom... And they didn't take ANY of my art work... I'm SO offened.

So I'm having mixed feelings about airports. I thought that I loved them; now I'm not so sure. Perhaps a person is a mamma's boy/pansy/lil'chickin'campshit if she feels safer/happier?/patriotic? boarding a plane on which everyone's shoes have been scanned for explosives...? I would like to see flying be MORE (much more) dangerous so that every time I board I plane I can feel the significance of what, I, as a human being, am actually doing. F-in' FLYING! That is cool! Nice job Wright bros! Am I right? Okay, I know flying is already scary for people; lots of people; some people who read my blog... Perhaps there could just be one alternative airline that says, 'we might crash, but don't worry about showing up at the airport two hours in advance. If you show up a little late, we'll toss down a ladder.'

I didn't wear a two piece on my trip, but I did run into the ocean carrying an Imperial (beer) wearing just my sports bra and padded, spandex bike shorts after a particularly awesome ride through the hills... so my torso did see the light of day; if only the fading light.

This one is a few weeks old; very Athens. Note the first appearance of Sara Jane. Perhaps I should always spell her name with a blacked out 'h'. ? Oh, I also wanted to make sure I had 'Corey' in there because it's just weird that this guy's name is 'Corey'. Is anyone confused? I am. I just got back in the US yesterday from a Costa Rican 'bike' trip and I had a difficult time biking into town today. (? less than three miles) I got real used to down shifting, or I got real used to drinking four cups of coffee with a buffet breakfast of eggs and fried plantains. I'm at Hot Corner now (3:30pm) drinking their Costa Rican coffee. It sucks. But it doesn't suck, because it IS coffee. I went on a tour of a coffee plantation on Valentine's Day. A lot goes in to making coffee, turns out. I shit in their bathroom twice. My younger brother was a little jealous, although I think he got a good one in too. As soon as I wrote that (about the shitting) a kid walked by with, what smelled like, a dirty diaper; instant karma's gonna get you. I knew I shouldn't have written about my bowel movements where my mom would read. shit.

I showed this one to Desi and she didn't quite understand what was happening in the last line...I think that it will work in the context of the previous 'sex scene' which I posted months ago. Please let me know if you can figure out what's going on. I don't want the actions and the dialog to be completely apparent, but I would like to give enough clues to the reader so that the meaning can be derived.

Princess diaries

Here is the first page of a short series I'll be doing about the cat 'princess'. This saga has not yet met it's conclusion in real time. I HAVE NOT adopted Princess and I'm probably not going to...well, you'll see what happens...

I also have been asked to write about Dan's recent visit to Athens, hopefully I'll start that later this week...I hope he doesn't mind if I post it on here; I know he wants to use it for a zine he's writing about his travels.

Okay...This is not a part of the Galapagos journey. I've been busy moving and flying, and walkining, and thinking, and not moving, and running, and talking, and eating, and not thinking, and drinking (non-alcoholic beverages), and...You know, not working on the comic enough. Anyway, here's one thing that I did this week (above). There might be some more moving themed 'oh,hey''s on the horizon. I'll get back to the Galapagos plot line as things start to settle down.

There will also be a special BIRTHDAY edition of 'oh, hey' tomorrow (Tuesday Oct.2)...Bum, bum, bum...Three of my favorite people all have birthdays in the same week (do you know who you are?)! Whoa! Libra? Is that right? Add an extra day to that week and we can include Sean and John Lennon in the mix (0ct. 9).

So I'm in Athens (Georgia). This is my first post from my new home. I have a desk and a light table (a glass table with a light under it). This set up should make for quicker revisions. These two pages required a good deal of revision. I wanted to keep it interesting although nothing very interesting is taking place.

I wrote/drew this last week when I was in a bit of a creative slump. Fortunately, after the first time that I completed it, I did not have convenient means to scan and post it. When I looked back at my work I thought, 'man, this is a step backwards.' I decided to draw both pages all over again and that's what this post is: the second draft.

I'm beginning to answer the 'graphic' question. I think that sex is an intergral part to a 'love story' (if I may use the term), but I'd like to handle it discreetly. I think this is a successful first step. Nothing truely graphic...your thoughts? I'm also trying to bring this heightened/altered consciousness aspect to things...are you interested? This aspect of the narrative feels particularly important for me; am I being sucessful in making it important for you?

After reading the dream discussion again I realize that it's pretty poorly worded, but that can be easily changed. I just want you to know that I know.

just thorns without the rose

I decided to post this one with the manila color in the background opposed to the bright white. The paper that I'm drawing on isn't white and I think that it looks better without the harsh contrast. These two pages do not immediately follow the previous post. There will be two (or four) pages where the new characters (Kana (Cah-nu) and Emma) are introduced. Hopefully I'll be posting those later today.

Before I continue, I would like to warn you that I'm going start refering to my character 'Meg' in the third person. She's not REALLY me; we just happen to have the same name, personality and experiences. (ha, ha)

In these two pages I'm trying to play up Meg's paranoia about Kip's (sexual?) relationships with his other female friends. I showed this first panel to my mom. She didn't understand what was going on. What's going on is that Kip and Kana are making omlettes in the kitchen and Meg is sitting in the livingroom, not quite sure what to do with herself. Meg doesn't like playing the passive observer in social situations.

The song playing in the background is Tom Waits' 'Downtown Train'. This is supposed to reflect Meg's feelings of isolation. He's singing about the 'Brooklyn girls' being 'thorns without the rose'. Despite currently living in Brooklyn, Meg knows she's not a true 'Brooklyn girl' but she feels like one in this setting. There's also a lryic where Tom sings 'they try so hard to break out of their little worlds,' perhaps I should have tried to include that line too. Meg is constantly trying hard to break out of her little world. That's why she wants to make an adventure out of, what is essentially, walking around the corner to buy beer. I guess if you know the song, this line can be implied(?). The metaphor describing a person as being the 'thorns without the rose' will be a theme that will take on various incarnations throughout the narrative. Meg is preoccupied with thorns. It is possible that you may not like nor sympathize with her at this point in the narrative. (?)

The second page...? What do you think of the 'elephant in the room'? Is Meg the only one who sees it? Yeah, I think she is.

I've said it before, but now it's on record, 'being in a new city is like being on drugs.' The left panel was inspired by my mom's comment about the previous post being 'MC Escher like'. The panel on the right was inspired by the panel on the left. I also thought about Cezanne; I thought, 'he was a good painter.'

There are a couple of things I'd like to mention with this entry. First of all, it didn't dawn on me until last week that I should be looking at each page as it corresponds to the adjacent page (like the pages of an open book). This realization caused me to write/draw these pages with that effect in mind. I drew the right page first. In this page I'm reading a passage from The Holographic Universe. What I am reading causes me first to imagine the materialization of a handgun. Why? I'm not sure. This actually happened. It seems so dramatic/suicidal when coupled with the fatalistic 'reading between the lines' depicted on the previous page. I'm going to have to resolve this dream later; you can't introduce a gun in the first act without utilizing that gun by the end of the story (right? I thought I heard that somewhere...). Anyway, the passage's reference to the carpet then causes me to trip out on the room's wall tapestry; much the same way I spaced out looking at the computer's keyboard on the previous page. All in all these parallel images are supposed to exemplify my altered state of mind, and they give me a chance to draw something that is visually more interesting.

So does this make sense? Of course, all of these pages are out of context and out of order, but I'm also hoping that they can stand alone. With this particular page I'm trying to convey a Don Quixote-type delusion through my own irrational conclusion that I might have a brain tumor. I never read Don Quixote...do I have the right idea? I seek heroism through a triumph over an imaginary rival (a brain tumor). What do you think? Bring it on.
